Hackney Dementia Festival – 17 to 23 May 2021

The Hackney Dementia Festival 2021 takes place 17 May – 23 May with most events being held online. https://www.lovehackney.uk/dementia-festival

The festival celebrates Dementia Action Week and the continued involvement of people living with dementia in sports, art and culture.

For most of the events there’s no need to book, you can simply turn up on the day. Where you do need to book, there is contact information so that you can get in touch with the organiser directly. Organisers will try their best to accommodate last minute bookings too.

The majority of this year’s programme is online but for the in-person events, organisers have said that they are accessible for people who use wheelchairs, but for more details on accessibility please get in touch with the event’s organiser directly. Online Caribbean Tea Party, Hackney Caribbean Elderly Organisation
12 noon – 2pm. Free
HCEO supports a thriving dementia memory wellbeing group amongst its many social activities for tackling isolation.
Join together online for a glamorous Caribbean Tea Party, also to share stories, arts & craft, gardening tips, music and dance.

Online Jerusalema Dance Workshop, Outward
11am – 12:30pm. Free.
The Jerusalema dance challenge is an example of how dance enables convivencia (living together). It is a line dance (animation in French, animação in Portuguese, animación in Spanish) that enlivens parties through simple choreography that makes people dance together.

Online Hackney Memories Workshop, Hackney Libraries
11 – 11.20am. Free.
If you used to step out to the Rio Cinema, Hackney Empire or loved your local library, join in for a friendly and relaxed session chatting about well-loved places in Hackney. Share memories and experiences promoted by a wide variety of fabulous photos, posters and pamphlets from Hackney Archives.

Online Session: Dementia – The importance of early intervention, Carers First
12 noon – 1:30pm. Free.
Join this talk on the importance of early intervention for mild cognitive impairments and how memory aids, social interaction, sleep hygiene, exercise, stress management, and diet can slow down the progression of dementia. Followed by Q&A session.

Dementia Activities – online with St Joseph’s Hospice
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 2 – 3pm, Wednesday 10 – 11 am.
St Joseph’s Hospice will be offering daily one hour workshops online, including: Dementia Friends Information Sessions; Playlist for Life workshop; Introduction to Namaste Care; a workshop based on a Ted Talk by Naomi Feil.

Hackney Libraries
As part of Hackney’s Dementia Festival, join Hackney Libraries’ online virtual library as participants learn more about dementia, highlight books with characters living with the condition and recommend resources for living well.
