Connect Hackney

“In London they seem to think that once you’re old, that’s it – you’re finished, they push you back. Wheras in Nigeria…as you get older you are respected more.” Gubsie

Hackney is a wonderful place to grow old. I’ve grown old here and I’m still growing old. I’m British now, I’m a Hackney girl… and here is home.” Anita

Over the past 6 months, Hackney elders have been sharing their stories – about love, work, change, prejudice, loneliness, pride and resilience.

We have spoken to people from many of Hackney’s diverse communities including disabled people, LGBTQ+, Vietnamese, Senegalese, Nigerian, British, American and Chinese.

These previously untold stories are being documented through two short films and a commemorative booklet and will be launched at a special Connect Hackney event on 31 October in Frampton Park.

The event will include a hot lunch on arrival, a Q&A about ageing, presentations, afternoon tea and cake and entertainment.

Date: Thursday 31 October 2019 | Time: 12 – 5pm
