Commissioning services for BAME communities

Connect Hackney (managed by Hackney CVS) is a £5.8m programme aimed at enabling Hackney residents aged 50 and over to improve their wellbeing, by reducing or preventing isolation and loneliness. It is one of fourteen programme areas in England funded through the six-year National Lottery Community Fund – Fulfilling Lives, Ageing Better programme. The ultimate aim of Ageing Better is to learn which kinds of projects and interventions work best to reduce and prevent the social isolation of older people.

Purpose of the commissioning round
In phase one Connect Hackney commissioned 23 projects, with over 2600 Hackney residents aged 50 and over getting involved in a broad range of activities (social activities, coffee mornings, craft groups, physical activities, learning new skills etc.)

We saw significant participation from people who are White British, Black African (Nigerian in particular) and Black Caribbean, as well as other communities including the Charedi Jewish Community. It is important that the programme understands the experiences of Hackney’s other BAME communities – their cultural, racial and demographic sensitivities and how these relate to social isolation and loneliness. .

As such, we are particularly interested in commissioning up to five projects that work with people aged 50 plus from members of Hackney’s BAME communities that the programme has had limited engagement with:

• Turkish and Kurdish
• Smaller Black African communities, for example, Francophone African
• Asian: Indian, Bangladeshi, Chinese and Vietnamese
• Other smaller ethic communities in the borough, for example, Latin American

£200k is available in this commissioning round – capped at £40K per award (potentially five projects).

A ‘Meet the funder Q&A session’ was held on Tuesday 12th March  at: HCVS, The Adiaha Antigha Centre, 24-30 Dalston Lane, Hackney, E8 3AZ. This was an opportunity for interested parties to find out more about the opportunity and ask any questions.
