Connect Hackney

We are inviting organisations from across Hackney who work primarily with black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities to join us for a special event to talk about ageing, isolation and how this specifically affects older people from BAME communities

Why are we holding this event?

Connect Hackney is a programme aimed at improving the wellbeing of people aged over 50 by preventing loneliness and isolation. It is one of 14 schemes funded through the Big Lottery Fund’s Ageing Better programme and will receive £5.8m over six years.

We are halfway through the Connect Hackney programme and our data tells us that people from some of Hackney’s BAME communities have not been involved in many Connect Hackney projects to date.

We want to do more to understand the experiences of older people from different BAME communities who may be isolated or at risk of isolation. This will mean we can invest in activities that may be of interest to older people from different communities and that will help us learn more about what has the greatest impact on reducing their loneliness and isolation.

When and where is the event taking place?

We would like to invite you to join an initial workshop with us on Monday 14 May 2018, from 10am to 1pm at the Tomlinson Centre, Queensbridge Road, London E8 3ND.

A hot lunch will be served after the event, so please tell us if you have any dietary requirements when booking your place.

How will attending this benefit me and my organisation?

The workshop will provide an opportunity to hear from John Hannen, programme manager from Ambition for Ageing, the Ageing Better programme in Manchester, where they have done some specific work on social isolation and older people from BAME communities.

The workshop is also an opportunity to help shape the work on social isolation and loneliness and older people from BAME communities that Connect Hackney will be investing in and developing later this year.
